What is Android? | Downgrade Android
Before we explain how to downgrade the Android operating system, it is better to talk a little about the nature of this process. Downgrade means restoring the operating system to its previous state. In this process, an older version of the phone’s operating system is installed on the device. For example, suppose you have recently installed Android 10 official or Beta on your phone and for some reason you do not like it and you want to restore the phone’s operating system to the previous state and from the same Android 9 feet (Android 9 Pie) Use the former. In this case, downgrade should be done. In much simpler terms, Downgrade can be equated with restoring Android to its previous version.
This is usually done when the new version of the Android operating system is not installed on the user’s device or there are bugs that show the user’s mobile incompatibility with the new operating system. Also, many people try to use Downgrade to restore the status quo after installing the new beta version of Android and encountering many bugs. Note that downgrading is not specific to the Android operating system, and it will be possible to do this on Apple iPhones, but in this special article, we want to explain how to downgrade Android.

How to restore Android to the previous version | Download from Android 10 to 9
As we mentioned before, in this article we want to explain how to downgrade the Android operating system from version 10 to 9 as an example. The general method of doing the dungeon on Android phones will be exactly the same as the steps we are talking about, but there may be differences in the details depending on the version of Android that is installed on your phone and the version of Android that you want to restore. Also, the phone used in this tutorial is the Google Pixel 3 XL. Try to do all the steps carefully and correctly according to the instructions so as not to cause you any problems.
Step 1: Install the Android SDK tool
The best way to downgrade the Android operating system is to use command codes that can be applied to a phone from a computer thanks to the ADB or “Android Debug Bridge” feature. To download the Android SKD tool , click on this section and download and install the tool related to the computer or laptop through which the command codes are to be transferred to the phone. Note that this tool is provided for both Windows and Mac OS and can be downloaded and installed on both.
Step 2: Make sure the phone’s operating system is up to date
Doing this step may seem strange to you, but experience has shown that not updating the phone’s operating system makes the downgrade process easier. To update the operating system of most Android phones, just go to Settings> About Phone> Software Update, but on a Pixel 3XL phone, go to Settings> System> Advanced> System Update. It is possible that the installation of updates on your phone varies slightly depending on the device model and manufacturer. To find the section related to installing Android updates, just use the search feature of the settings section. Note that to download and install Android updates, your phone must be connected to a suitable Internet network that allows you to quickly download the required updates. After updating the phone’s operating system, do the next step.
Step 3: Download the older Android image
In order to restore Android to the previous version, you need to download the image image file of the mentioned operating system that you want to be installed on the phone. Generally, every Android phone company attaches a list of official images provided for its mobile operating system on its official website, and users can download them. Some interface sites may provide these files, but of course it would be better to download the image file you want directly from the site of the device manufacturer. For example, by clicking on this section, you will be directed to the official Google page to download the image of the Android operating system of the Pixel 3 XL phone.
we have chosen for this purpose is called Android 9.0.0 (PQ3A.190801.002, Aug 2019). So at this stage and to download the image file suitable for your phone, be a little careful and spend time. If you download the whole wrong image that is not suitable for your phone at all, it will not be installed and the download process will be difficult, but if you download other versions of the images provided for your phone (for example, Instead of the image of Android 9, download the email of Android 9.2 or 8), the download process will be done without any problem, but the phone’s operating system will be restored to the same version of your choice and downloaded in the email.
Note: Sometimes you may have to download a copy of the image that was installed on your phone by default. This image is called the Factory Image. Simply put, this file is actually an image of a version of your phone’s operating system that was installed by default.
Step 4: Enable USB Debugging
Now you need to enable USB Debugging feature on your phone. Enabling this feature allows you to perform specific operations directly on the mobile phone directly after connecting the phone to the computer via ADB commands. If the mentioned option is disabled in the phone, it will not be possible to return Android to the previous version. But how to enable this option in our phone? To do this, go to the Settings menu and go to the Developer Options section and select and enable the USB Debugging option.
If you do not find the Developer Options option in your mobile settings menu, just go to Settings> About Phone and tap Build Number seven times in a row to make a pop-up phrase appear on your mobile screen. Now you can go to the settings menu and you will see that at the bottom of the page and the options provided, the Developer Options option is also provided. After enabling USB Debugging feature on the phone, almost everything is ready to start the Android download process and the basic commands to do so must be provided.
Note: Sometimes you may have to enable OEM Unlocking. To prevent the problem, just type the word OEM in the search field of the phone settings menu and enable this feature.
Step 5: Start the download process and return Android to the previous version
Now it is time for the main part of the work. Connect your phone to your computer or laptop with a suitable cable. Now you need to run the Command Prompt window in Administrator mode. Since most users use Windows 10, we will show you exactly how to run the Command Prompt window in it as an example. To do this, type Command Prompt in the search bar at the bottom of the Windows screen, and then click Run as administrator. In the pop-up window that appears, click Yes.
Now unlock your phone screen and agree to it if a message about accessing and using USB Debugging is displayed on the screen. Now type the following command in the Command Prompt window and press Enter. This will restart your phone automatically and run in Recovery Mode.
adb reboot recovery
In some phones, it is necessary for the user to take special actions to enter the recovery mode and after restarting the device. For example, in the Pixel 3XL phone, the Power button had to be pressed and then the Volume Up button had been pressed and the Power button had been released at that moment. This will bring up the Fashion Recovery menu. It is possible that to enter the fashion recovery mode on your phone, it is necessary to use a combination of special buttons. In many Android phones, there is no need to press special buttons, and by typing the above command, the phone will run automatically in recovery mode.
The fashion recovery menu includes something similar to the one above, and options to choose from are provided in this section. By pressing the volume up and down buttons, you can jump between the options provided in this section, and pressing the power button also issues the command to select any desired option. Use the volume buttons to go to Apply Update from ADB and then press the power button on the phone to select this option. In this case, a message similar to the one below may appear on your phone asking you to specify the Android email file you want.
On your computer, move the image file you downloaded to the ADB folder that was downloaded in the first step. Now in the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:
adb sideload crosshatch-ota-pq3a.190801.002-13edb921.zip
Note: Part of the above command includes the name of the image file that was downloaded. The email file we want is specified as 190801.002-13edb921, so the same name is typed in the command provided. Naturally, the name of the image file you downloaded will be different and should be replaced.
In this case, the process of downloading or restoring Android to the previous version will start automatically and will be completed within a few minutes. If everything is done successfully, the phrase Successful will be displayed on both the phone and the Command Prompt command window. However, sometimes there may be problems in some mobile phones and prevent the process mentioned under the above criteria from being completed successfully. In such cases, you should pay attention to a few points.
What if Android is not successful with the above method?
If you do not successfully run Android by following the above steps, we recommend that you pay attention to a few important points. First, check the OEM Unlocking feature of the phone and activate it if possible. So turn on the phone and enter the Settings menu and then OEM Unlocking and make sure this option is enabled with the USB Debugging option. Then reconnect the phone to the computer and enter the following command in the Command Prompt window to run the phone in recovery mode:
adb reboot recovery
Note that according to the description of the previous step, you may need to press certain physical buttons to activate the phone mode recovery mode. After the recovery menu appears, type the following command and press Enter:
adb reboot bootloader
Now download the image file that corresponds to the same official and default version of your phone’s operating system. For example, if your phone comes with Android 8, be sure to download the Android 8 email for it. Generally, mobile manufacturers, along with the names of the images they provide for each phone, specify which version is the same as the default version installed on the mobile. After downloading this image, you need to move it to the ADB folder. Then type the following command in the Command Prompt window:
fastboot flashing unlock
In this case, an image and message similar to the one above may appear on your phone screen. If you see such a message, do not worry, this message only warns you that the bootloader unlock command has been issued and doing so will void the phone warranty. By pressing one of the physical buttons of your mobile phone, you can go through this page and the mentioned message. After the phone bootloader is unlocked, you can type the following command in the Command Prompt window and press Enter:
In this way, the order to download or restore Android to the previous version will be issued and within a few minutes, the phone’s stock ROM image file will be flashed and the device will be restarted and will be booted with the factory default operating system. Note that performing these additional steps will only be necessary if the previous steps described above do not work.
